Abstract
Background. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is considered as one of the factor that increases the risk of Tuberculosis infection. Tuberculosis in Indonesia is severe and ranked 4th in the world after India, China and South Africa. Past researches suggest that Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is considered as risk factor for TB 2 – 5 times greater. This is due to DM assisting TB to manifest more severely in comparison to TB without DM. For reasons stated previously, this research was conducted to obtain the chances of type 2 DM patients at Atma Jaya Hospital to get infected with lung TB. Methods. This research utilized case control study using medical records from Atma Jaya Hospital. Data were further processed by pairing gender and age between case and control groups. A total of 121 medical records were tested using Mc Nemar nonparametric paired correlation. Result. From total sample of 121 patients, TB is more likely to infect male in comparison to female patients with a ratio of 2.1 to 1 respectively, with a productive age of 27-46 years. Case group has a total of 51 samples with a chance of 70% infection of TB due to DM type 2, in comparison to control group with 53.5% for patient without TB and type 2 DM (n=70, p=0.013, OR=2.20, CI 90%). Conclusion. This research supports that there were a significant correlation between type 2 DM to higher chances of getting infected with lung TB in Atma Jaya Hospital. Patients with type 2 DM is 2.20 times more likely to be infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis compared to patients without DM type 2.
