Abstract
Background :Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) showed that cholesterol level increase start from 20-24 years old. In Indonesia, 35,9% of population over 15 years old have cholesterol level above normal. Cholesterol level can be lowered with maintaining normal body weight, decreasing fat consumption and increasing dietary fiber intake. Methods : This cross sectional study was conducted among 97 students 20-24 years old chosen by convenience sampling at Medical School of Atma Jaya Catholic University. Respondents were asked to fill out a questionnaire about their knowledge, attitude, and behavior on dietary fiber and their cholesterol level was measured. Results :Most of the respondents were female (60%) and had normal cholesterol level (51,5%). The majority of respondents have enough knowledge (68%), good attitude (50,5%), and less behaviour (74,2%) of dietary fiber. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there is a relationship between knowledge and cholesterol level (p=0,007). In the contrary, there is no significant relationship between attitude (p=0,266) and behaviour (p=0,059) of dietary fiber with cholesterol level. Conclusion :There is a relationship between knowledge of dietary fiber and cholesterol in adults 20-24 years old. There is no significant relationship between attitude and behaviour of dietary fiber and cholesterol in adults 20-24 years old. Cholesterol level not only affected by dietary fiber intake, we should monitor other factors like fat consumption, physical activity, and genetic.
