Abstract
Introduction: Neurodegenerative disease occurs along with increasing age. Naming dysfunction can be happening especially in elderly with low education. Risk factors and olfactory dysfunction will influence naming dysfunction.
Aims: To determine the relation between demographic risks factors, olfactory function to naming dysfunction on elderly with low education. Methods: This cross-sectional study was part of Active Ageing Research at Medical Faculty of Atma Jaya University. The research was done in Pusaka Jakarta Barat, from July to August 2016 to 127 elderly aged 60 years or more. Assessment of olfactory function was performed using 10 familiar odors in elderly, while assessment for naming function was performed using Boston Naming Test.
Results: The subjects were mostly women (72.4%), average of age 69 years, and level of education <6 years (57.5%). There were significant relationship between gender to naming function (p=0.039), and level of education to naming function (p=0.002). Meanwhile, there were no significant relationship between age to naming function (p=0.237), and olfactory function to naming function (p=0.279).
Discussion: There were meaningful relationship between gender to naming dysfunction, and level of education in which increased four times the risk of naming dysfunction. Woman and elderly with low education as potential risk factors for naming dysfunction.
