The proper design and formulation of a dosage form requires consideration of the physical, chemical and biological characteristics both of the drug substances and pharmaceutics ingredients to be used in fabricating the product. The drug and pharmaceutics material utilized must be compatible with one another to produce a dosage forms product that is safe, effective and acceptable. The formulation of traditional medicinal drugs consist of medical plants that can be considered to include all plant materials such as foliage, root, flower, fruit and seed which may be used as such or in the form of their extracts. The formulation of phytopharmaceutical raw material into dosage forms is a complex operation which cannot be regarded only as a problem of pharmaceutical technology. It is more demanding in that it calls for close collaboration between manufacturer and formulator especially of extract based products. The problem of controlling extract has two aspects; those are pharmaceutical technology and phytochemical aspects.
