Abstract
Background. Transgender with high perceived discrimination at risk of stigmatized and discrimination which negatively affect their mental and emotional health and also their quality of life.
Objectives.Find out the association between perceived discrimination with self image of transgender male to female in Sanggar SWARA Jakarta.
Methods.This is a cross-sectional research for the 105 male to female transgender in Sanggar SWARA Jakarta. The measurements used are demographic, perceived discrimination, and self-image questionnaire. Data analytics are univariate and bivariate.
Results.There are 105 transgender male to female with average age of 28.5 years, 35.2% the most range of age in 25-31 years, 52.4% high school/vocational study, 64,8% working, 69,5% low-income status, 25,7% Java, and 36.2% most of respondent lived in North Jakarta. There are 60% with high perceived discrimination. The results of the dimensions of self-image 61% bad self-consciousness, 40% instability, 68.6% low self-esteem and 24.8% with negative the self-perceived. Chi-square test results showed that there was significant correlation between perceived discrimination and self-consciousness (P = 0.022; CI = 95%; OR = 2.55), self-esteem (P = 0.013; CI = 95%; OR = 2.89) and the perceived self (P = 0.013; CI = 95%; OR = 3.70).
Conclusion.Transgender with high perceived discrimination and low self-image is a risk factor for mental emotional health disorders and also low quality of transgender life.
