Abstract
Introduction: Acne Vulgaris (AV) is a chronic inflammatory of the pilosebaceous glands caused by multifactorial, i,a. the excessive excretion of the sebaceous glands. Excess sebum can be reduced with oil blotting paper, which is a thin paper with micro pores that can absorb the oil face. The aim of this study is to find the association of oil blotting paper on sebum excretion according to Oily Skin Self Assessment Scale (OSSAS) questionnaire and the effect to acne severity according to Global Acne Grading System (GAGS) questionnaire.
Methods: The study was conducted in 2017 with an experimental design and used questionnaires as data collection tools, both at the beginning and in the end of the study in the control and intervention groups. The respondents are students of class 2014 and 2015 Faculty of Medicine Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (n = 60) whom recruited through purposive sampling. Sebum excretion was measured by OSSAS questionnaire and the degree of AV severity was measured by GAGS questionnaire. The data was analyzed using Chi-square test with significance level of p <0,05.
Results: 11 respondents (18.3%) had dry skin, 23 respondents (38.3%) had slightly dry skin, 17 respondents (28.4%) had slightly oily skin, and 9 respondents (15%) had oily skin. AV prevalence is 100% with 48 people (80%) had mild severity and the rest had moderate severity. There was no effect of using oil blotting paper on sebum excretion according to OSSAS questionnaire (p = 0,211) but there was improvement on the difference of raw score on GAGS (p ? 0.001).
Conclusions: Statistically, there was no effect of using oil blotting paper on sebum excretion according to OSSAS (p=0,211) but there was improvement on the difference of raw score on GAGS (p ? 0.001)
