Abstract
Background: Excessive use of the internet can lead to internet addiction. Internet addiction can have physical and mental effects and is associated with sleep disorders.
Purpose: To know the relationship between internet addiction with emotional and behavioral problems and quality of sleep on students of Strada Daan Mogot Senior High School.
Methods: This research is a cross sectional study on 285 students of Strada Daan Mogot Senior High School. The measuring instruments used are demographic questionnaires, Internet Addiction Test (IAT), Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Analysis of these data are univariate, bivariate using chi square method, and multivariate using logistic regression test.
Results: A total of 14% of respondents with internet addiction experienced emotional and behavioral problems, including (12.3%) behavioral problems, (10.5%) problems with peers, and (8.4%) emotional problems. In addition, (26.7%) respondents with internet addiction have poor sleep quality. There was a significant relationship between internet addiction and sleep quality (p = 0.037). Students of SMK Strada Daan Mogot with internet addiction have a risk of poor sleep quality of 1,657 times greater than students without internet addiction (p = 0.038, 95% CI 1.029-2.669 with OR = 1.657).
Conclusion: Internet addiction affects the quality of sleep. The presence of comorbidity and exposure to blue light from electronic communication devices can affect the quality and quantity of adolescent sleep with internet addiction.
