Background. Acceptance, stigma, and discrimination against male to female transgender affect their self esteem that may cause emotional mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and stress.
Objectives. To determine the association between self esteem and mental health of male to female transgender in Sanggar Swara Jakarta.
Methods. This research was done cross-sectionally using analytic methods to 111 male to female transgender from Sanggar Swara Jakarta on July 25th-27th 2016. In this research, demographic questionnaire, mental disorder and chronic disease screening questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale, and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-42) have been used to assess self esteem and mental health. Data analysis using Chi Square test.
Results. There were 106 trans women from Sanggar Swara Jakarta ranging from =18-45 years old, with mean 28.54 years old, 25.5% came from West Jakarta, 83% had a high school education level, 84.9% currently working, 70.8% had below average income, and 25.5% Javanese. There were 36.8% respondents with positive self consciousness, 35.8% respondents with instability, 57.5% respondents with low self esteem, and 9.4% respondents with negative perceived self. There were 44.3% respondents suffered from depression, 58.5% respondents suffered from anxiety, and 36.8% suffered from stress. There is significant association (p<0.05) between stability and depression, self esteem and depression, stability and anxiety, the perceived self and anxiety, stability and stress, self esteem and stress.
Conclusions. Low self esteem on trans women may cause mental health problems. |
