Isi artikelThe article chronicles the long journey that Indonesian education has been going through in its continuous efforts of matering English language. It looks back as far as the 1950s, starting with a review of Grammar Translation Method in that era, and describing subsequent major changes in the approaches to teaching the language. Five major approaches are discussed, namely Audiolingual Method in the 1970s, Communicative Language Teaching in the 1980s, Meaning-fulness Approach in the 1990s, followed by Competence-Based Curriculum and Educational Unit Curriculum in the middle of 1990s. It brings up the theoretical underpinnings of each approach, its prominent characteristics, and emphasizes practical factors that eventually triggered a change of paradigms in the way language is taught is the classroom. The paper highlights a recurring pattern that marked the shift from one major approach to another, emphasizing the swing from meaning-focused instruction to form-focused instruction, whic culminated on the most recent post-method era. It also makes a brief review of similar changes that have been taking place worldwide, pointing out several innovative methods and techniques that seem to hold prospect for future language teaching. Finally, it ends with a forecast of the situation of language teaching in Indonesia in the future.
