The paper reports on a study that investigated the various Indonesian newspaper texts with the systemic functional approach for the purpose of identifying the process types and the lexicogrammatical patterns representing each process type. This is concerned with the metafunction of the clause to represent experience (experiential metafunction). According to Systemic Functional Linguistics, the only kind of experience expressible in language is the process, which incorporates the participant(s) and the circumstance(s) surrounding it. The data consisted of 420 clauses from 16 texts on various topics, including newspaper columns, editorials, letters from the readers, and public figure features from eight prominent newspapers in Indonesia. Results revealed five types of process deployed in the newspaper textsmaterial, relational, verbal, mental and existential processes. Each process is represented always by a verb (not a verbal group), with or withous affixes. The relational process is the highest for the tendency to ellipsize the verb from the clause. This, however, does not reduce the importance of the verb as the primary element of the predicate of the clause. The study also found that every process type has its unique preferences of the lexicogrammatical forms of the verb.
