Isi artikelThis paper presents an analysis of the realization of textual meaning in four scientific articles in the fields of biology, economics, social science, and language. The analysis focused on how textual meaning is realized throught thematization, lexical string, reference chain, and text structure. In terms of thematization, the choice of themes on the clausal level and patterns of topic development (in Theme-Rheme and Hyper-theme-Hyper-rheme relations) on the discoursive level reflects relatively high cohesiveness. In terms of lexical string, it is evident that the choice of themes realizes textual meaning through various meaning relations, including repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, cohyponymy, meronymy, and co-meronymy. The relations indicate not only the scope of the subject matter presented in the articles ideationally, but also the cohessiveness of the lexes textually. In terms of reference chain, it is evident that the participants were identified in the texts according to reference systems. Textually, the way to refer things in reference chain can reflect the degree of text cohessiveness and can explain the things to be referred to under the principle of generalization. In terms of text structure, the text structures of Biology and Economics Articles are more inclusive that those of Social Science and Language Articles. The analysis of text structure also show that Biology, Economics, and Language Articles have expository characteristics, whereas Social Science Article has descriptive characteristics. Different types of genre and social purposes lead the articles to employ different text structures.
