The debt we all owe to Dell Hymesfor his pioneering development of a theory of communicative competence is evident in every contribution to this special issue of Applied Linguistics. The editors are very pleased therefore to include Dell's reactions to each of the papers. The comments below indicate what he might have said had he actually been present at the seminar last July.
