The inevitable impact of English as a Lingua Franca has brought a selfawareness to learn English. There are many courses or clubs in Jakarta which provide English program as their subjects. The English learners can choose which place suits their needs. Those who have learnt English are expected to be able to communicate in English. The mastery of English speaking skills helps the English learners to deliver well-organized communication. The present study is to investigate members’ perceptions of speaking skills enhancement in an English speaking club named Jakarta Toastmasters Club. There is no teacher to prompt the learning process in the club whose members’ ages are over 18 years old. The acquisition of English speaking skills is learnt through “learn-by doing” process. The research is based on a year observation from December 2014 – December 2015 and a questionnaire which consists of speaking skill aspects. The data was collected from 38 active members with a minimum membership of 3 months to ensure that the members have delivered speeches and have actively taken roles in meetings. The findings show that the club members agreed to admit that their speaking skills have enhanced by actively participating in the club meeting. The enhancement of the speaking skills could be perceived from some aspects i.e.: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. The observation to some members towards meetings in the club showed how members enhanced their speaking skills. |
