In nursing field, critical thinking hereinafter referred to as (CT) involves judgement with regard to the ability to assess and demonstrate skills and make appropriate decisions (Price & Harrington, 2010). CT is important in reading. It is an essential factor to improve learners’ thought and to make them successful in their life. Facione (1990) stated that there are six skills that should be followed to reflect CT. The skills are Interpretation, Analysis, Evaluation, Inference, Explanation, and Self-Regulation. Previous studies investigated relationship between reading comprehension and CT, analysed reading questions that reflect CT skills the most, or argued that CT is necessary for nursing profession (Aloqaili, 2012; Azizi, 2012; Simpson and Courtney, 2002). CT is connected to questions are given in the reading questions. To promote nurses’ CT, a textbook can be a teaching aid in teaching reading. A textbook for Indonesia nurse should provide CT reading questions that help to facilitate teachers to increase learners’ ability in thinking critically. The present study analyses reading questions in English textbook for Indonesia nurses. This book is used in NEC (National English Center), an institution that serves an ESP (English for Specific Purposes) for healthcare professions. It aims to scrutinize whether the reading questions reflect CT skills and to what extent the questions reflect the Facione’s theory most remarkable skill. The data taken will be analysed using six skills of Facione theory. The findings show lack of Facione’s CT skills, where two skills, Interpretation and Analysis are dominating in the reading questions, meanwhile Evaluation and Self-regulation do not reflect in the reading questions. |
