Isi artikel
A commentary on Aage B. Sorensen's "Toward a Sounder Basis for Class Analysis," which appears in this issue. The writer agrees with Sorensen's argument that, in light of the effective collapse of the Marxist tradition, class analysis needs to be informed by better theory and that efforts made to develop theory on supposedly "Weberian" or "neo-Weberian" lines have not been impressive. He regards as helpful Sorensen's effort to bring some order to class concepts by differentiating them according to the level of theoretical ambition with which they are associated. He notes the three main types of class concept that Sorensen distinguishes and argues that any well-constructed theory of social class should be capable of performing effectively at all three levels that Sorensen specifies. The writer outlines two main reservations that he has about the adequacy of Sorensen's proposals and he seeks to develop his own arguments by reference to both differences and similarities between Sorensen's approach to class analysis and his own. He notes how their approaches lead to contrasting expectations about the futures of the class structures of modern capitalist societies.
