Abstract
Background: The first generation college student (FGCS) and first generation medical student (FGMS) groups have more obstacles than non-first generation students in general during their study at the university. However, attention to both groups is still lacking. It is proven by the lack of research on both of the groups in Indonesia.
Objectives: This study aims to find out what are the obstacles faced by students of FGCS and FGMS groups also suggestions to be given to the institution during their study at the university.
Methods: This study was conducted by using Content Analysis. Data were collected through various sequences such as reflective writing, in-depth interviews, and focus
group discussions. Respondents did not know each other until the end of the study to avoid bandwagon effects. The study also utilized the triangulation.
Results: Results showed that FGCS and FGMS students had obstacles on lesson, adaptation, loss of opportunities and psychological aspects. The first-generation students stated that the barriers were not felt by the non-first generation students. The first-generation students also hoped that there would be a meeting between the first generation for new students as well as changes in lecturers' teaching quality, the
academic system, and facilities and infrastructures in order to help the first generation students learning during their college.
Conclusion: FGCS and FGMS group students stated that the biggest obstacles lies in the aspects of lessons and adaptation.
