Isi artikelBateson asserts that a knowing mental function is embedded in the evolutionary process. This is not pantheism, but a complex immanent interaction of "mind" and nature. The interactions are between inside and outside, and require a "double description," that is, input from both. Bateson discovers that if he is to talk about mind he cannot ignore consciousness; therefore his initial definition of mind as a pattern that connects is not sufficient. This is always the quandary of the reductionist approach. Bateson realizes he needs to write a new book in which he addresses the issues of consciousness. He lets us know he would like to have a hand in the survival of his species, but fears to claim any power to do so.
