Isi artikelThe parachute that will lower the spacecraft carrying the Curiosity rover is tested inside a wind tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center, Moff ett Field, Calif. The parachute was launched inside the wind tunnel from a mortar into an 80-mph wind. The 51-ft diameter parachute, the largest ever built for extraterrestrial flight, uses a disk-gap-band configuration and has 80 suspension lines. It was built by Pioneer Aerospace, South Windsor, Conn. Most of I the orange and white fabric is nylon, though there's a small disk of heavier polyester near" the vent in the apex of the" canopy to handle the higher stresses there. It is designed to deploy at Mach 2.2 in the Martian atmosphere, where it will generate 65,000 pounds of drag force. The wind tunnel itself, the world's largest, measures 80-fttall and 120 ft wide, big enough to house a t Boeing 737. Image: Courtesy NASA/JPL-Caltech
