The focus of this article is on desktop publishing as it relates to hardware, firmware, software, and those activities centered in and around the hardware architecture of the IBM-PC/XT/AT machines, clones, derivatives, and workalikes. This article presupposes that its readers understand the fundamental differences between the text-based, character-cell architecture of PCs (IBM-PC types of personal computers) and the pixed-based architecture of Apple and Macintosh computers, their derivatives, clones, and workalines.
