Isi artikelIndonesia's largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), has delayed its National Congress (Muktamar) two months, from January to March. NU officials cited the wet season as the main reason for the delay."Yes, we have rescheduled the Muktamar because we are afraid that the weather will not be friendly for the participants to travel from their hometowns to Makassar," one leader of NU said, citing the weather prediction released by Indonesian Meteorology, Geophysics, Climatology Agency (BMKG) that the wet season will last from the end of the year 2009 through to February of 2010Of course, the rainy season usually falls during those months so that explanation may not hold water. Another source also very close to NU said that the delay was not because of the wet season, but "because of the money reasons”. As one of Indonesia's most influential organizations, NU had long enjoyed financial support from the government, which has funded national events held by the organization as well as its affiliated groups, and in return, the NU followers have voiced support for the government's policies.
