Abstract
The surface roughness of a cast product affected by the use of raw materials molding sand in the sand casting process. Silica sand (SiO2) which is generally used as a molding raw material has some drawbacks that affect the surface roughness of the resulting product. The Silica Sand also often cause a defect in the product due to the lack of heat resistance and undergo physical magnification due to high temperatures. Aluminium Silicate Sand (Al2SiO5) is a mixture of silica sand (SiO2) with material Alumina (Al2O3) has the potential to improve the quality of the surface roughness of a cast product. At Aluminium Silicate Sand only an application used for pattern forming the core in the process of metal casting. As hypothesized, the type of molding sand does not affect the mechanical properties of a material, but the mechanical properties experiments need to be done. In this study will be known to influence the type of molding sand to the surface roughness and the mechanical properties of AISI 4140 steel. In the process of sand casting, Aluminum Silicate Sand as mold was able to make improvements roughness grade steel AISI 4140. The ability to produce a good surface to grade N9 roughness finish of roughness finish N11-N10 produced by mold made from silica sand, making Aluminium Silicate Sand used as substitution of Silica Sand. From these results, reinforces the hypothesis that the Aluminium Silicate Sand can be used as raw material for the mold to correct the value of roughness finish on AISI 4140 steel material.
