Isi artikel
Foolishness was the loyal fellow of Flaubert throughout his life. In his childhood. he was sensitive to the inanity, pedantic banality, and obtuse nastiness that surrounded him. For him. literature was the best antidote to this poison: he purified himself by inoculating his characters. This essay studies the nature of foolishness in Madame Bovary, focusing on the triumph o\' materiality and animality. petrified language, hollow dialogues, and thoughtless assertiveness. The objects in the Flaubertian universe incarnate the ugliness of reality of a materialistic. bourgeois society. Objects become the epic emblems of characters" emptiness. In the novel, foolishness is apparent as people appropriate others' speech as their own. They mouth cliches with the conviction of tremendous intuition, and believe in their own value and uniqueness while speaking the worst banalities. In Madame Bovary. the dialogues are hollow and vacuity is revealed behind pretty formulations. Mocking everything, Flaubert remains a derisive writer.
