Abstract
Background. Frailty is very common in the elderly. Risk factors that can lead to frailty are divided into physiological factors, medical/comorbid diseases,
sociodemographic and psychological factors, and also disability. Elderly with frailty is considered vulnerable to falls, disability, depression, weight loss, prolonged
hospitalization and death. These conditions can affect the quality of life of the elderly. Good dietary intake and physical activity have shown to reduce the risk of frailty. In addition, the body mass index used to calculate body composition also has a strong correlation with frailty. This study was conducted to determine whether there is a relationship between the characteristics of respondents (age, gender, education), nutritional intake, body mass index, and physical activity against frailty in elderly.
Methods. This is a descriptive analytic study with cross-sectional design. The respondents are 143 elderly people in PUSAKA, West Jakarta who meet the criteria
of inclusion and exclusion. The data were collected through questionnaires, frailty assessment using SHARE-FI, and nutritional intake assessment using 3 day food
record. In addition, there are assessments of body mass index, as well as physical activity assessment using 24 hour recall. The data were analyzed by using chi-square
statistic test to find the relationship between respondent's characteristic, dietary intake, body mass index, and physical activity on frailty with the confidence interval in this study is 95%.
Results. Data analysis shows that there is a significant relationship between gender and frailty (P = 0,028), level of education and frailty (P = 0,007), body mass index and frailty (P = 0,018), physical activity and frailty (P = 0,017). However, there is no significant association between age with frailty (P = 0.414) and dietary intake with frailty with P = 0.895 for energy, P = 0.945 for carbohydrate, P = 0.747 for fat, and P = 0.077 for protein. However, when compared to the average requirement of protein based on FAO/WHO/UNU that is 0.6g/kgBW/day obtained a significant relationship (P = 0.002).
Conclusion. The study shows that gender, , level of education, body mass index, physical activity, and protein based on FAO/WHO/UNU have significant association with frailty, whereas age and dietary intake are found to have no significant
association with frailty.
