The objectives of this study are to find out the kinds of sentence fragments frequently occurred in students’ writings, to examine the grammatical errors which are related with the sentence fragments found in the students’ writings, and to see why these sentence fragments occurred in the writings. These objectives are important to research because the writer found her students’ from every semester always write sentence fragments instead of sentences in their essays. This research is qualitative research where the writer analyzed the writings of the students to get the data and also through interview for getting more information related with students’ background knowledge and how this background knowledge would affect their sentence fragments which occurred in their writings. The results showed that there are five kinds of sentence fragments students wrote in their writings, the most frequently occurred sentence fragments are missing-verb sentence fragments and missing-subject sentence fragments. The grammatical errors which became the problems of the fragment errors are the basic sentence patterns, the use of connecting words, gerund/to infinitive to begin sentences, and also the understanding of students about clauses. |
