Mental spaces, generally defined, are what happens behind the curtain of linguistic, pragmatic, and cultural aspects of language and take place in the cognitive areas of speaking and reasoning (Fauconnier 1994). As we think and talk our mental spaces are recalled, created, and modified (Fauconnier and Turner 2002). In order to achieve appropriate comprehension during discourse or thinking, sensorimotor temporal parameters of that situation must be successfully integrated (de Vega et al. 2004). This study investigates the frequency at which Taiwanese intermediate students of English can identify conflicting and illogical sentences with respect to two temporal adverbial parameters, while and after, and action verbs from similar and conflicting sensorimotor systems. It further investigates how they construct these sentences in their mental spaces. Fifty Taiwanese junior high school students participated in a survey to identify illogical constructions in sentences containing the adverbial parameters white or after, and two verbs from either similar or conflicting sensorimotor systems. Illogical sentences were those that contained the adverbial while and two verbs from the same sensorimotor system. The participants successfully identified the illogical sentence construction at a rate of 76%. There was almost no effect on identification results with respect to the two sensorimotor systems.
