Frederic-Yves Jcannet's irreverent article on Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio subtitled "un Nobel immerite" sparked a small literary debate, revealing contemporary critical trends. Jcannct reproaches Le Clezio, on the one hand, for being but a common author of bestsellers, and on the other, for having betrayed the avant gardist convictions of his youth. Indeed, studies of Le Clezio, most notably of his first novel Le Proces-verbal and his last novel Ritournelle de lafaim, show that his writing went through a considerable transformation. However, this evolution cannot be explained by the fact that Le Clezio let himself be driven by commercial forces: the case is actually the opposite. One of the reasons why his writing does not seem to correspond to the aesthetic canons of avant-garde literature is that Le Clezio tried to reconstitute a bond that literature seems to have lost with the world. His discovery of the Amerindian myths brought about an aesthetic upheaval resulting in what could be called "mythical writing." The second way in which the writing of Le Clezio does not correspond to the avant-garde aesthetic defended by Jeannet, is that the latter is often based on forms of writing inspired by games. This type of writing was widespread in French avant-garde circles of the 1960s and 70s. Actually, playfulness is an ideology that opposes the very idea of writing in accord with the principles of the Cosmos. Even if inspired by myths, however, Le Clezio writing does not necessarily merge with them. One of the ways in which the architecture of his novels differs from that of myths is in the way he uses fortune in the world he represents.
