Isi artikelIn his Sentimental Education, Flaubert wanted to create a work about "nothing," a novel of failure. Its purpose is to reflect the ridiculousness of daily life, the pettiness of humanity, the vanity of action, and the monotony of existence. Its characters are mediocre figures of futile ambitions whose failed lives result not from hostile forces but from the characters' intrinsic limitations and woeful lack of vision. This study analyzes the novel's theme of failure in three dimensions: sentimental, social and historical failure. The inactive passion harbored by the protagonist, Frederic Moreau, is discussed in order to study his sentimental and professional failure, his inability to desire concrete success or to even act passively by seizing the opportunities that are offered him. The historical pessimism expressed in Salammbo reappears in Sentimental Education. For Flaubert, history indecipherable and no longer following a clearly discernible evolution turns into a motionless story, repeating an eternal present. Frederic does nothing, believes in nothing and is worth almost nothing, hence the questions: Do we not finally attribute the attitude of this "useless" anti-hero to a nihilist aesthetic tending towards "nothing"? Do his cowardly and indecisive characteristics not correspond perfectly with a world of diminishing meanings and values? Finally, does the disillusionment of the hero not offer, for the reader, a recognition of the necessarily imaginary nature of all experience? Somehow, is the les-son of Sentimental Education not the idea that illusion is the lord of all things?
