Isi artikelScientific authors of 319 articles in nineteen current research journals were asked to ecplain how they : 1) first became aware of a specific reference which they cited, and 2) how they subsequently obtained it. Disciplines represented in the study were chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology and geology. Of several possible modes of access, personal contacts and referemces on the literature were most important. Actual retrieval occurred primaril;y through library subscriptions and copies from colleagues. Variations among disciplines appeared in the use of database, current awareness services, and personal journals. Scientists' perceptions of problems with their journal literature and suggestions for improvement revealed some interesting ideas and a few misconceptions. Findings have implications for present and future roles played by the academic library in serving its scientific clientele.
