Abstract
Background: Creatine is a nitrogenous organic acid found naturally in vertebrate animals and humans that can help provide energy reserves for muscle and nerve
tissue. The phenomenon of the use of creatine as a supplement starting in the early 1990s by the athletes. Some of study showed that creatine supplementation
increasing mass and strength muscle, but these results are still controversial.
Aim: To obtain information on the effect of creatine supplementation on muscle.
Methods: Using a systematic review by Cochrane with the help of Google Scholar, Biomed, PubMed. Selected literature between the years 2006 up to 2016. Assessment of quality of journals using PRISMA.
Results: 8 literature related to the effects of creatine supplementation on adult athletes showed creatine supplements in the form of powder orally at a dose of 20 g / day (0.30 g/kg body weight/day for 5 days and the next 0.075 g/kg body weight/day) was positively correlated with muscle mass (7) and muscle strength (5). Creatine supplementation has no significant side effects. The mechanism of creatine supplementation may occur due to increased levels of creatine in muscle fiber type II, increased concentrations of Na + -K + pump ATPase, increasing water retention in the muscle and increase muscle protein synthesis..
Conclusion: Based on the analysis of literature, found a positive correlation of creatine supplementation on muscle mass and muscle strength.
