Abstract
BACKGROUND:The increase in the elderly population each year cause many health problems, one of them is the decline in physical function so the elderly have difficulty in performing daily activities. Some studies suggested the relation between decreased haemoglobin level with decreased physical function (aerobic endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, and body balance). METHOD:This research was an analytic-correlative research which isconducted cross-sectionally in 84 respondents in Kelurahan Cideng, Central Jakarta. The data was collected by giving questionnaires, haemoglobin blood tests (SLS-haemoglobin method), examination of physical function (aerobic endurance, upper limb muscle strength, lower limb muscle strenght, flexibility of the upper body, flexibility of the lower body, and body balance) using the Senior Fitness Test.
OBJECTIVE:To determined the relation between haemoglobin and aerobic endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, and body balance in elderly. RESULT:Mean heamoglobin : 14.37 g/dL. Mean; aerobic endurance (89 steps), upper limb muscle strength (right = 17 times, left = 17 times), lower limb muscle strength (11 times), flexibility of the upper body (right = -6.7 cm left = -15.4cm), flexibility of the lower body (right = 0.7 cm left = 0.9 cm), and body balance (10.68 seconds). There was a significant relation between hemoglobin with aerobic endurance. There was no significant relation between hemoglobin with upper muscle strength, hemoglobin with lower limb muscle strength, hemoglobin with the flexibility of the upper body, hemoglobin with the flexibility of the lower body, and hemoglobin with body balance. CONCLUSION:There was arelation between hemoglobin level with aerobic endurance.
