Abstract
Background: One of the most common cause of nosocomial infection are Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A.baumannii and P.aeruginosa are opportunistic patogens that often causing heavy infection to an immunocompromised patient. Antibiotic is the most common drug for infection that caused by bacteria. High intensity of antibiotic usage causing problems like bacterial resistance towards antibiotic. In other hand new antimicrobial substance is being discovered from plant extract. One of those plants is turmeric.
Methods: This study is an experimental research. C. longa Turmeric powder from Bogor Institute of Agriculture were extracted with maseration method using 96% ethanol as the solvent. The experiment used disc diffusion method on Mueller Hinton Agar medium. Experimental groups used the extract with 4 different concentrations i.e 4 mg/mL, 12 mg/mL, 20 mg/mL, 28 mg/mL. The positive control containing meropenem 10 µg/mL and gentamicin 10 µg/mL.
Results: Results show an increased concentration of turmeric’s extract is directly proportional with the inhibition zone, but not yet reach the standard scale of susceptible. Wildstrain A. baumannii and standard A. baumannii ATCC 17978 on this study is resistant to the positive control gentamicin and meropenem. Wildstrain P. aeruginosa is resistant to gentamicin, and only standard P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853 is susceptible to both gentamicin and meropenem.
Conclusion: The result showed that ethanolic extract of C. longa Turmeric did not give sensitive antibacterial activity towards Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but still have antibacterial potential because the bacteria used ini this study is resistant to positive control gentamicin and meropenem.
