Abstract
Background. The use of speed reading application has a high potential to excel reading speed and comprehension, especially among medical students.
Objectives. The aim of this research is to find any effect to speed reading ability after the use of speed reading application.
Methodology. The design in this research is a mixed method approach. It involves 40 medical students in FKUAJ which is divided in three intervention groups based on each application used: (1) Acceleread, (2) QuickReader Lite, (3) Sprint. The quantitative approach was an experimental comparative analysis using the
Comprehensive Reading FPUAJ as the instrument. Repeated Anova was used if the data fits a normal distribution pattern, otherwise the Friedman test will be used with a confidence interval of 95% (a = 0,05). While the escalation speed between each measure is analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis. The qualitative
approach used a content analysis method, FGD data from intervention group is used.
Results and Conclusion. The use of speed reading application give an impact to speed reading ability, but the impact is not significant for the student. Two
intervention groups show an escalation of speed reading ability. Comprehensive reading ability did not show any improvement. Student felt that it is hard to make time to use the application each day, reading habit is still low. The advantages of the application are the media that is easy to access, simple to use, various readings to access, no need to pay for using it and the display which is appealing. They convey that they will suggest others to use speed reading application.
Suggestion. The improvement of speed reading ability can be trained. Then a research in reading methods development and reading practice for medical students
is needed.
