BACKGROUND: Candida albicans is a fungal species that often infect human, also known as candidiasis diseases. This fungal can manifest in oral mucosa, vaginal mucosa, or even became invasive. As time pass, this fungal developed resistance against antifungal drugs. This became a serious health problem because resistance cases is escalating. Now many new kind of treatment are being researched to treat candidiasis, especially candidiasis caused by Candida albicans. One of treatment that being researched is garlic (Allium sativum). This research purpose is to see the effect of extract of garlic against Candida albicans growth. METHOD: Ethanolic extract of A. sativum obtained from Institut Pertanian Bogor and C. albicans obtained from FKUAJ Microbiology Department. This study using the disk diffusion method on Saboraud Dextrose Agar. The experimental group used the extract with 5 difference concentration i.e 1.25 mg/mL, 2.5 mg/mL, 5 mg/mL, 7.5 mg/mL, and 10 mg/mL. Control group consist of positive control containing ketoconazole 10 µg/mL and negative control containing DMSO solvent. RESULT: Inhibition zone created in every concentration with an average 17, 19, 20, 24, 21mm CONCLUSION: Ethanolic extract of garlic have inhibition effect on C. albicans growth. Concentration 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 give a good result (sensitive), which is with >20mm inhibition zone. |
