Introduction: Nowadays, there are so many factors that can cause a disease. One risk factor is obesity or being overweight. Based on the results Riskesdas 2013 in Indonesia, there is an increased prevalence of obesity in males 5.8% and females 18.1% from 2007-2013. Weight gain is also associated with increased blood pressure. Soybeans have some benefit in controlling body weight and blood pressure regulation. Method: Twenty-four college students of Faculty of Medicine in Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia were picked using convenience sampling method to participate the study. Subjects were given and instructed to take soy milk 240cc/day for 4 weeks after their blood pressure and body weight were measured. After 4 weeks of routine consumption, subjects’ blood pressure and body weight were re-measured and taken into data. Results: Marked decrease of blood systolic pressure are only observed in obesity I (p=0,002) and prehypertension (p=0,014). In both genders, there are also a significant decreases in systolic and diastolic blood pressures. On body weight, marked decrease are observed in men (p=0,001), overweight (p=0,016), obesity II (p=0,03), and also in normal blood pressure (p=0,01). Conclusions: Soy milk consumption decreases systolic blood pressure in the obese I and prehypertension. On the other side, both systolic and diastolic blood pressures were also shown decrease significantly in both genders. There is also significantly change in body weight as well. |
