Abstract
Background: global prevalence of obesity continues to increase and such a trend has been related to greater risk on physical health, mental health and cognitive function. Excess weight can lead to a declining of executive function. Best time for assessing executive function is over the age of 17 years old.
Objective: the aim of this study was to find differences in executive function among Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine Preclinical Students Year 2013 with a body mass index of obese and normal category.
Methods: cross sectional data of body mass index and executive function among 186 Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine Preclinical Students Year 2013 were used. Data of executive function was obtained by using the Stroop Effect Test (R>0.80). Data were analyzed with bivariate analysis.
Results: 43.7% students have normal BMI, 19.9% have overweight cataegory and 22.6% have obese category. Obese group showed a highest percentage for mild increment in Stroop Effect test to assess working memory(4.9%), inhibition function (4.9%) and cognitive flexibility(4.9%). Differences found in this study wasn’t statistically significant by Mann Whitney Test.
Conclusions: obese group had a mild increment in time needed for performing all evaluated aspects within Stroop Effect Test (word task, color task, word-color task and interference score) compare to normal group (obese=25.40s(12.98-60.90) vs normal=24.69s(6.85-50.73)). Differences found in this study wasn’t statistically significant.
