Abstract
BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever is an acute systemic infection caused by Gram-negative bacteria, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi. The problems of typhoid fever are diagnostic examination, Multi Drug Resistance (MDR), and lack of study about typhoid fever. Therefore there is a need to conduct a descriptive study about characteristic of typhoid fever patient in Atma Jaya Hospital to get new information.
METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study with quantitative design was carried out on 41 hospitalized patients with typhoid fever. The samples were taken by cluster sampling methods from medical record at Atma Jaya Hospital in 2014-2015.
RESULTS: The majority of typhoid fever patient is female (53.7%) and between age 26-35, as high as 31.7%. The most common chief compliant is fever (85.4%) and has stable vital signs. Thirty-seven patients did the Widal test, 78.8% have titer Anti O and H above 1:80 and 1:160. Ciprofloxacin is the most commonly given antibiotic to the typhoid fever patient (51.3%). The average of hospital length of stay in typhoid fever patient at Atma Jaya Hospital is 6 days (2-25 days). 12.2% patients had complication, and the most common complication is anemia (60%).
CONCLUSION: Typhoid fever is more common in women and at the age 26-35. The overall chief complaint is fever with normal vital signs. Widal test is used for diagnostic in almost all typhoid fever patients. The most commonly given antibiotic is ciprofloxacin. 12.2% patients had complication, and the most common complication is anemia.
