Abstract
BACKGROUND: Based on census in 2010 showed that Indonesia is among the top five countries with the largest number of elderly in the world, reaching 18.1 million in 2010 or approximately 9.77% of the total population. Wiht the large increasing number of elderly, it is necessary to observe several physical conditions and symptoms that are often experienced by the elderly, one of which is a Daytime sleepiness, which is a complaint that is often experienced by patients with obesity are known to not have symptoms of sleep apnea. EDS is associated with work-related incidents and reported to have worse health conditions.In the elderly themselves, EDS increases the risk of falling due to lack of concentration. It can lower the quality of life of the elderly. The theory of the cause of obese individuals who experience EDS is not known certainly. Therefore, researchers conducted a study the effect of body mass index on this EDS.
METHODS :This is an analytic study with cross-sectional study with a number of respondents as many as 35 people and chosen by cluster sampling method in PantiWerdhaWismaMulia in Jakarta. EDS data was using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale questionnaire, while BMI measurement using weight scales and height measurements of the knee. Data analysis using chi square test with a significance value 0.1.
RESULTS : The result showed two elderly were male and 33 female, with 60% of them have BMI more than normal (22,9 kg/m2) and 37.15% with no EDS.The chi square results shows that there is no significant relationship between body mass index and Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (p = 0.587)
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that there is no association between BMI and Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
