Abstract
Background: Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) infection is one of the neglected
tropical disease. STHs infection usually occurs in children and can disturb their
growth and development. This infection could be prevented by maintaining good
personal and environment hygiene. This study is conducted to find the relation
between sanitation and STHs infection.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2015 using questionnaire and
stool sample. Respondents of this study (n=113) were 1st – 3rd grade elementary
students in Muara Siberut. Sanitation (hand-washing before meals, hand-washing
after defecation, toilet facility at school, toilet facility at home, defecation places at
home, water for-hand-washing facility at school, nail hygiene) is evaluated by
questionnaire. STHs infection is evaluated by stool sample analysis (Kato-Katz
methods). The data was collected primarily and analyzed using chi-square with
significance level of p<0,05.
Result: The prevalence of STHs infection among elementary school students in Muara
Siberut is 53,1%. Toilet facility is provided at every school, but the quality couldn’t
be evaluated. Non-running-water is provided at every school. 73,5% students have
bad nail hygiene.
Conclusion: STHs infection prevalence among students in Muara Siberut is 53,1%.
Relation between sanitation and STHs infection is unmeasurable.
