Abstract
BACKGROUND: Breathing is the most vital processes in the body, because this process affects the activity of each cell and most importantly, this process is closely
linked to the performance of the brain. Pranayama is an art of breath control that helps to bring awareness to breathe and change habits and breathing patterns.
Pranayama Ujjayi, which is one type of Pranayama, is shown to have a relaxing effect and can reduce heart rate and blood pressure.
METHODS: This research uses experimental design research. The study was conducted by collecting respondents using questionnaires and were accompanied by informed consent. Respondents who agreed, will be the subject of research. After that, there will be repeated measurements in which the first measurement, the
respondent would be the control group and the second measurement, the respondent became the study groups. The required sample of this research was 35 people per
one study group so that the total sample required is 70 people. Data were collected and analyzed using Paired sample t test.
RESULTS: The results showed that there was a significant relationship between Pranayama Ujjayi by a margin decrease in systolic blood pressure and heart rate (p = 0.000) and there was no significant relationship between Pranayama Ujjayi by a margin decrease in diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.645). Meanwhile, for the correlation between Pranayama Ujjayi with systolic blood pressure showed a low value. Meanwhile on the correlation between Pranayama Ujjayi with diastolic blood pressure and heart rate showed a value that can be ignored.
CONCLUSION: Pranayama Ujjayi can help lower systolic blood pressure, diastolic and heart rate after aerobic exercise more in the same time as normal resting. On the difference in systolic blood pressure and heart rate, there is a significant influence of Pranayama Ujjayi. However, another case on the difference in diastolic blood pressure, in which the effect of Ujjayi Pranayama is not significant.
