Abstract
Background. Dengue fever is an infectious disease with distinctive symptoms, caused by dengue virus and is spread by aedes aegypti. Dengue fever is often seen in
school-aged children and is commonly found in Banten, which is one of the dengue endemic region in Indonesia. Education and family contribution has been said to
influence children's awareness about a disease and its transmission. This study will investigate the relationship between students' awareness level regarding dengue
fever and the number of dengue cases in the studied school.
Objective. To investigate Santa Laurensia High School students awareness regarding dengue fever.
Methodology. This is a cross-sectional study. Questionnaires were given to Santa Laurensia High School students period 2016-2017.
Results and Conclusions. Sample of the study was 107 students who participated and fulfilled the criteria. Participants were 62 females (57.9%) and 45 males (42.1%). From the sample, 48 participants (44.9%) is 16 years old and 46 participants (42.6%) is in their second year of High School. There were 59 participants (55.1%) who got information about dengue fever from less than or equal to 3 source of information. About 35.5% of participants stated that the most informative source is from family. Additionally, there were 59 participants (55.1%) with fair awareness, 33 participants (30.8%) with good awareness, and 15 participants (14.0%) with less aweaeness. Most students who participated in the study have the fair awareness.
Suggestion. Future research should increase the number of samples and add more variable, such as by giving information to participants prior to the study to increase
the validity of the research.
