Abstract
Background: Diastolic dysfunction is a condition when the left ventricular filling occurs abnormally. It is caused by the change of elasticity, relaxation, and/or recoil capacity of myocardium. 50% patients with heart failure have diastolic dysfunction. Hypertension is the main cause of death in Indonesia. According to the Indonesian
National Primary Health Research on 2013, the prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia has reached 36.8% of the diagnosed. A chronic and uncontrolled
hypertension can cause accumulation of fibrotic tissue and collagen fibers in the myocardium, resulting in diastolic dysfunction.
Methods: The design of this research is cross-sectional study and data was collected retrospectively through medical record. The research took place in Atma Jaya
Hospital. The subjects are 55 hypertensive patients that had undergone echocardiography between June 2015 to September 2016, recruited with quota sampling. The data analysis uses Chi square with a = 0,05.
Results: Out of 55 respondents, 45.5% had uncontrolled hypertension. 74.2% had diastolic dysfunction. The largest proportion of diastolic dysfunction grading was
grade I (75%), followed by grade II (15%), grade III (10%), and none had grade IV. There was no significant relationship between uncontrolled hypertension and
diastolic dysfunction, with p = 0,423.
Conclusions: The majority of respondents had controlled hypertension and had diastolic dysfunction. There was no significant relationship between uncontrolled hypertension and diastolic dysfunction among the hypertensive patients in Atma Jaya Hospital.
