Background: The prevalence of cognitive disorders including dementia increases with age. Poor cognitive impairment may result in inability to live independently and reduce quality of life. It is necessary to prevent the decline of independence in elderly. Aims: To know the relationship between cognitive impairment and independence in eldery in Kelurahan Cideng, Kecamatan Gambir, Central Jakarta. Method: This research used descriptive-analytic studies with cross sectional approach which was conducted on July 25, 2015 - October 10, 2015 as part of the geriatric research at Faculty Medicine of Atma Jaya Catholic University. Cognitive impairment was assessed using Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the independence of the elderly were assessed using Activity of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrumental Activity of Daily Living (IADL ). Result: A total of 210 respondents, 29,0% respondents were found having cognitive impairment 20,0% respondents had mild dependence in performing ADL and 3,3% respondents need help in performing IADL. The results of the bivariate analysis showed significant relationship between cognitive impairment and independence in elderly in performing IADL (p value < 0,05). Conclusion: The higher cognitive functions associated with a high degree of independence in IADL. |
