Abstract
Background : Infectious disease is still one of the main concerns of health problems in the community that can not be resolved. Staphylococcus aureus is the major cause of various infections and increasingly showing resistance to several antimicrobials. Indonesia has a very diverse natural wealth, and one of which is Shallot (Allium ascalonicum), which is usually used as a traditional medicine because it has many health benefits. Shallot contains active ingredient Flavonoid derivates Quercetin, which is known to have activity against broad spectrum bacteria.
Objective : To identify the antimicrobial effects of Shallot extract methanol against Staphylococcus aureus growth.
Methodology : This study is an experimental study using 3 concentrations of Shallot extract 5%, 10%, and 15%. Measurement of antimicrobial activity using the macrodilution method and the calculation of the amount of bacteria is using Total Plate Count (TPC) method. Result analysis using decrease percentage in the number
of bacteria.
Results and conclusion : Shallot extract has antimicrobial activity and is effective in inhibiting the growth of S. aureus bacteria, where the best concentration of Shallot
Extract in inhibiting the growth of S. aureus is 5%. The percentage of bacterial decrease reached 99,9% compared to the positive control.
