BACKGROUND : Among various existing mental disorders, depressive and anxiety disorder are mental health problems that most commonly occur in medical students. Depressive and anxiety disorder are caused by various factors. Factors that were examined in this study are locus of control, self-concept, insomnia, sleep quality, physical activity, learning preferences, personality, living with the nuclear family and their interactions, and cultural tightness/looseness. This study aims to determine the factors that influence depressive and anxiety disorder, their determinant factors, and also the extent of their influences on pre-clinical students of Medical Faculty of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia in 2015. METHODS : This research is an observational analytic-descriptive research which is done cross sectionally. This research was conducted by distributing questionnaires and interviewing 260 pre-clinical students of Medical Faculty of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia in 2015. The data were collected and analyzed by using logistic regression. RESULTS : The results showed that external locus of control (p = 0.009), insomnia (p = 0.002), poor sleep quality (p = 0.049), and ineffective communication with father (p = 0.000) are proven statistically-related to depressive disorder in pre-clinical students of Medical Faculty of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia in 2015. Moreover, the results also showed that external locus of control (p = 0.007), insomnia (p = 0.032), ineffective communication with father (p = 0.001), and cultural looseness (p = 0.000) are proven statistically-related to anxiety disorder in pre-clinical student of Medical Faculty of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia in 2015. CONCLUSION : The determinant factors of depressive disorder in pre-clinical students of Medical Faculty of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia in 2015 are external locus of control, insomnia, poor sleep quality, and ineffective communication with father, with Odds Ratio respectively 2.827, 3.586, 2.201, and 10.663. Meanwhile, the determinant factors of anxiety disorder in pre-clinical students of Medical Faculty of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia in 2015 are external locus of control, insomnia, ineffective communication with father, and cultural looseness, with Odds Ratio respectively 2.333, 1.964, 5.825, and 4.182. |
