Abstract
Candidiasis is the most prevalent invasive fungal infection. It becomes a health problem regarding the high treatment cost and mortality it causes. Antifungal drugs resistance and side effects have led researchers to develop novel therapies to treat candidiasis, which is mostly caused by Candida albicans (C. albicans). The herbal therapy using Andrographis paniculata (A. paniculata) has been widely researched lately. Despite its extensive distribution in Indonesia, the potential of A. paniculata has been scarcely studied in Indonesia. This research examined the bioactive substance of the plant and the efficacy of its 60% ethanolic leaf extract against C. albicans. The extract was tested against C. albicans in vitro using the disc diffusion method, the concentrations of the A. paniculata leaf extract were 50 mg/mL, 100 mg/mL, 150 mg/mL, 200 mg/mL, and 250 mg/mL. The extraction was carried out using the Soxhlet apparatus. Results of bioactive substance detection were positive on phenol, steroid, diterpenoid, and flavonoid. This study showed no zone of inhibition of each extract concentration tested against C. albicans. Hence, the ethanolic leaf extract of A. paniculata is not effective against C. albicans. The writer recommends the use of A. paniculata plant from its ideal habitat and maceration extraction method for future researches to prevent the substance damaged by the heating process.
