Background : Diabetes mellitus is a sistemic disease that can cause complications to the various organs of the body. This disease is also one of the risk factors associated with gingivitis. However, gingivitis can be prevented if patients with diabetes mellitus have a rank of knowledge and good manners in maintaining oral hygiene. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge and behavior of patients with diabetes mellitus with incidence of gingivitis. Methods : This study was conducted in patients with diabetes mellitus who seek treatment at Atma Jaya Hospital in Pluit, North Jakarta. The subject of this study conducted by accidental sampling during the period from February to March 2016. Data collection using a questionnaire consisted of 15 questions about the relationship between diabetes mellitus and gingivitis as well as 10 questions about how to maintain oral hygiene, also taken photos of the teeth and gums to know presence or absence of gingivitis. Results were analyzed by chi-square test using SPSS version 21. Results : There are 92 respondents involved in this study consisted of 30 men and 62 women. Of the 92 respondents if viewed from the level of knowledge and behavior, 60.9% of respondents have good knowledge and behavior, while 39.1% of them have bad knowledge and behavior. 43.5% of respondents suffer from gingivitis, and 56.5% were not suffering from gingivitis. From the results obtained chi-square test, p-value = 0.037 which shows there is a relationship between knowledge and behavior of patients with diabetes mellitus with incidence of gingivitis. Conclusion : There is a relationship between knowledge and behavior of patients with diabetes mellitus with incidence of gingivitis at Atma Jaya Hospital in Pluit, North Jakarta(p=0,037). |
