Abstract
Background : Older population grows remarkably in Indonesia. Plenty of nutritional problems happen among them, which may cause significant impact. Both obesity and undernutrition share a common outcome: decrease of blood Hemoglobin level. This study aims to determine the relationship between anthropometric status and hemoglobin in older population.
Methods : This is a cross-sectional study and is a collaborative geriatric study in Atma Jaya Medical Faculty. Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) score and
hemoglobin level of elderly people were measured. The study took place at Cideng, Central Jakarta on 25th July-10th October 2015. Data were collected and analyzed
using Chi-square Test..
Results : Most respondents had normal MNA score and Hb level (60,6%;82,8%). 64,7% older population with age above 70 years had low Hb level. Men significantly
had 6 times the risk to low Hb compared to women (p=0.001). Working from home was a protective factor towards low Hb level. Those malnourished and at risk tend to have low hemoglobin level (p=0.0019,OR=1.254).
Conclusion : This study shows that gender, job history, and MNA score have significant relationship with Hb. Male are 6 times more at risk of having low Hb.
Working from home is a protective factor against low Hb level. Older population who are malnourished and at risk are significantly more likely to have lower hemoglobin level.
