Abstract
Background: Fungal infection has been recognized as a cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients in many developing countries, including Indonesia. Candida albicans infections became a problem for Indonesia because this infection haven’t been treated properly and the number of cases that still increasing. Candidiasis therapy often using drugs from azole class like fluconazole. This had become a problem as fluconazole resistance had been founded because of some factors. Using plants as drugs for antifungal effect had been used in many countries. One of the plants that have an antifungal effect is sambiloto. Sambiloto or in latin called as Andrographis paniculata contained andrographolide that had an antifungal activity. In this study, researcher will using the hexane extract of A. paniculata leaves to find antifungal effect against C. albicans.
Goal: The aim of this study is to determine the effectivity of A. paniculata leaves extracted by hexane solvent against the colony growth of C. albicans
Method: This study is an in vitro experimental. A. panciulata leaves extraction using maceration method with hexane solvent. High performance thin layer chromatography was used for andrographolide identification. Disc diffusion and macrodilution were used for antifungal testing.
Result and Conclusion: Andrographolide identification using HPTLC showed the exact same retention factor (Rf) value between the substance in A. paniculata leaves sample and the standard andrographolide. The disc diffusion results shown that there weren’t inhibition zones founded in three concentrations tested that were 0.5 g/dl, 1.0 g/dl, 1.5 g/dl. Macrodilution results showed that antifungal potential founded in the highest concentration that was 1,5 g/dl. That was proven by the reduction of the amount of C. albicans colonies compared with the other two concentrations when grown in sabouroud dextrose agar (SDA).
