Abstract
Background: The elderly population in Indonesia is predicted to increase. Ageing is characterized by the onset of degenerative diseases which can lead to nocturia. Nocturia in elderly has a high prevalence. Nocturia has negative impacts on the elderly and was associated with a decreased quality of life (QOL).
Method: This research used a cross-sectional approach with a descriptive analytic study. The respondents were elderly people aged 60 years and above and resided in
Cideng Village, Gambir Sub-District. Interviews were conducted using Nocturia-Quality of Life (N-QOL) questionnaires, which consist of 13 questions, with a total score range of 0-52. A higher total score indicates greater influence of nocturia on QOL.
Result: The prevalence of nocturia was 65,6% in men and 76,1% in women. Nocturia was more common in the elderly and increased along with increasing age
(the prevalence was 68.2%, 78.4%, 78.6% for the age group of 60-69, 70-79, and =80 years old respectively). Men exeperienced nocturia more often with =3 times
voiding, while women 1 times (p=0.008). Frequency of voiding increased with age. The average total score of N-QOL was 9,68 with 82.4% of respondents had a total
score of 0-13. Nocturia =3 times voiding has more effect on QOL.
Conclusion: The prevalence of nocturia in this study was 72.8%. Gender of respondent and voiding frequency has a significant association (p=0.008). Most respondents had a very low N-QOL total score, therefore they hardly felt the impact of nocturia on QOL.
