Abstract
Background: Mental health is one of the determining factors of health. Mental health, means every individual realizes his potential, can face the stressors of everyday life, can work productively, and are able to contribute in the community. Depressive disorder and anxiety disorder are two types of mental disorder that would affect social life, which are higher in medical students and resident compared with the general population. Depressive disorder and anxiety disorder can be influenced by the self concept. Self concept is classified into three levels, namely high, moderate, and low self concept. High and moderate levels of self concept result in positive impact, but low self concept tends to have a negative impact and causes depressive disorder and anxiety disorder.
Method: This study is a descriptive and analytical study conducted cross-sectional. Participants were pre-clinical student of Faculty of Medical of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia in 2015 as many as 260 students. Depressive disorder and anxiety disorder are assessed by structured interview using MINI ICD-10 (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview International Statistic Classification of Disease-10) instrument and self concept is assessed by TSCS (Tennessee Self Concept Scale).
Result: There is a significant association between self concept and depressive disorder in pre-clinical student of Faculty of Medical of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (p < 0.001). However, there is no significant relationship between self-concept and anxiety disorder in pre-clinical student of Faculty of Medical of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (p = 0107).
Conclusion: Pre-clinical student of Faculty of Medical of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia with low self concept have higher risk, namely 3.281 times to get depressive disorder compared with pre-clinical student of Faculty of Medical of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia with moderate self concept.. Meanwhile, pre-clinical student of Faculty of Medical of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia have higher risk, namely 7.875 times to get depressive disorder compared with pre-clinical student of Faculty of Medical of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia with high self concept.
